FASHION: Chanel

What is a fashion blog without once mentioning Chanel?

Right now, I am preparing to open L.S. Illustrated boutique on Etsy.com and I am thinking of what kind of illustrations I would like to put up. I really, really wanted to do Chanel piece, because, although it is a bit cliche for me to say… it’s classic. But how do I portray Chanel in a way that is different, not just an image of a bag, or black and white?

I immediately thought of the quilted pattern that is so iconic. Yes…do that. Make the entire picture quilted.

Then, I began to do a little research on this Chanel 2.55 bag and there was so much more to it than I initially thought!

Like:

  • The lining’s burgundy colour represents the colour of the uniforms at the convent where Coco Chanel grew up.
  • There is a zippered compartment at the inside of the front flap. That is where Chanel is rumoured to have stored her love letters in her original bag.
  • The bag has a quilted diamond or herringbone pattern on the exterior. Using a running stitch, this gives the bag shape and volume. The pattern is believed to have been inspired by several sources: by jockeys’ riding coats, the stained-glass windows of the abbey at Aubazine, as well as by the cushions in Chanel’s Paris apartment.

And my favourite

–Chanel, recognising that the modern women needed to have their hands free while attending social functions, designed a double chain shoulder strap, something common in downmarket products, but rare in luxury circles at the time. The chains were attached by leather-threaded chain inserted though eyelets. The caretakers of the convent she grew up at hold the keys at their waist dangling from the same type of chains as the 2.55 shoulder strap chains.–

The modern woman. She recognized what women needed in fashion and made it stylish.

That is why I needed to do an illustration on Chanel. I dream to be as smart as that lady :)

Now to explain the gigantic logo on the illustration…

I watch Gossip Girl and am in love with the Prada Marfa painting on the Van der Woodsen’s wall. Those who watch will know what I am talking about! It is just a humungous “Prada” on a canvas and I love it.  Hence, giant C’s! :p

 Happy Monday!!

NEWS (ish): Work in Progress

Hi everyone!

So I haven’t posted on my blog in a few days! I have been caught up with work, school and life in general! Also I have been working on a large scale project that has been taking up a a lot of my time! I have been asked to do a mural for a new office in the Philippines! —so it is REALLY large scale!–and I am so excited.

Considering I do all my sketches on my ipad and I have an ancient computer to work with, creating something this large has been a great and challenging task and who knows how it will even look as a mural!

Since this blog IS about my work…I would love to share with you my work in progress (smaller version of course! :p ).

It is pretty straight forward and is a total mish mosh of my inspirations…Cafes in Paris and Madrid, walks on a nice spring day, my love for animals….and also you will find a few renditions of my favourite looks from The Sartorialist. :)

So there it is…just a few more people sipping coffees and strolling down the street then voila! (cross fingers!)

I am kind of digging the lack of colour in the background! :) …what do you think?

LIFESTYLE: “Through My Lens” – Mariana De Saro

I first met Mariana a couple of weeks ago, in Madrid. We were introduced by her cousin, Maria, whom I had featured in my Lookbook a little while ago. You know how sometimes, when you meet someone, you would almost rather go to a dentist appointment than continue with the meal? With Mariana, this was definitely NOT the case. We got along like peas and carrots! She had the most joie de vivre than anyone I have met in a while….it was quite infectious. I HAD to feature her on my blog! So here it is! :)

Oh! And did I forget to mention that she is a photographer? A wedding photographer! And a great one at that. Being the face of Pierce Lifestyle Photo, Mariana’s work gives you anything but typical ho hum wedding photos!

Hey, and from what goes on behind her lens, I really don’t doubt it…No ho hum here!

FASHION / LIFESTYLE: Are you a Betty or a Veronica?

It’s the age old question!

I’d like to think I am a little bit of both! One thing is for sure, I would not fight with my best friend over a guy who can never choose between us! For about 5 decades nonetheless!

I am the biggest fan of Archie Comics. It was my first exposure to illustration!

How about you? What makes you a Betty? What makes you a Ronnie?

I got my inspiration from this old pin up from a Betty and Veronica comic! Click here!
